Collaborating with local, interstate, and Indigenous artists over the course of 2018 to 2024, a large-scale public arts initiative at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza in Adelaide has created an environment reflecting the rich culture and community of the area.

The project provided an exceptional opportunity to continue creative placemaking in the heart of Adelaide for the Scentre Group, with the aim of contributing to the community’s identity, fostering pride, and humanising the built environment.

There was a strong focus on First Nations representation, with a highlight of the project being a landmark artwork – a meaningful and beautiful mural titled ‘You, Me, Together’. Commissioned in 2018, this large-scale piece occupies a significant portion of the North East Rd aspect of the facade at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, representing a close collaboration between established Sydney-based street artist Georgia Hill and local emerging First Nations artist Elizabeth Close.

The project evolved in early 2024 with a continuation of the original mural. Elizabeth Close, assisted by local artist Dave Court, created a new artwork on the adjacent Myer box facade. This extension reinterprets the original piece, connecting the new entertainment tenancy into the existing Entertainment and Lifestyle Precinct.

Both works continue the narrative of ‘You, Me, Together’ – a powerful message of inclusiveness and reconciliation. The new artwork speaks strongly to an acknowledgement of connection to community, as referenced by the circular iconography and dot work. Bold patterning and topographical linework are informed by the landscape itself, emphasising the importance of acknowledging Country and our presence on Indigenous land.

The Westfield Tea Tree Plaza public arts initiative is designed to bolster the new and vital economy created through the engagement of artists. It represents a significant investment in the cultural landscape of Adelaide, bringing together established and emerging talents to create a vibrant, inclusive space that reflects the spirit of the community.

The project was curated and produced by aMBUSH Gallery, continuing their commitment to creative placemaking and community engagement through public art.
