To mark National Reconciliation Week 2022, Indigenous artist Alex Birdfox painted an intricate black and white dot artwork, live in the bustling lobby at Citigroup Centre, 2 Park Street, Sydney.
The sessions were Alex’s first experience of painting outside a traditional studio setting, and were held over three days, from 1–3 June, with the finished artwork auctioned to raise funds for Gunawirra, a community-led organisation that works with First Nations communities to help them reach their full potential.
Alex is of Wiradjuri descent – born and raised in Yuin Country and creating modern Aboriginal art in Darkinjung country. A self-taught emerging artist since lockdown 2020, his works explore metaphysical, philosophical questions about the nature of our reality, and how that intertwines with spirituality and human existence.
Produced by aMBUSH Gallery and presented by Citigroup Centre, the event reflected the National Reconciliation Week theme of ‘Be Brave. Make Change’, which challenges all Australians to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for the benefit of all Australians.
