Sydney-based artist Christopher Jhureea, more commonly known as CJ the Kid, believes the purity of the child in us all is something to cherish – to share untainted ideas of the world, judgement-free, and do what feels good. It’s a conviction that’s evident in his latest exhibition, Kidology, on display at aMBUSH Gallery Sydney this August.

Produced and presented by aMBUSH Gallery, Kidology is a vibrant artistic exploration of the ups and downs, the love and heartbreak, and deep curiosity for life with all its weird and wonderful ways. Created between 2016–2022, his paintings and mixed media works are an inventive kaleidoscope of colour; a call to arms to embrace who you are, and disregard how serious society says you should be.

The takeaway for audiences of Kidology is simple; keep the inner child alive, keep the fun intact in everyday life, and allow yourself to be swept up in a whirlwind of imagination, heart and soul.

CJ’s life has been immersed in creativity. Growing up in the small coastal town of Woolgoolga, he started dancing at the age of 15 and fell in love with the art of movement. With a diploma in musical theatre and commercial dance under his belt, he then moved to Sydney, becoming absorbed in the world of dance and performance. A six-year stint in the United States followed, including three years as a lead solo character with Cirque du Soleil, and the burgeoning discovery of his love of painting. In 2016 CJ returned to Australia where he has continued to create, dream, and discover via both his artworks and his dancing.

CJ’s distinctive art is free flowing, and he paints without judgement by tapping into a powerful kid-like spirit. He uses colours purely because they make him happy, and creates because it feels good. For CJ, art is like another way of speaking, allowing him to share his vision with the world and inspire others through his passion.

It’s an honest celebration featuring vibrant, validating, and positive artworks that are underpinned by personal learnings and a huge dash of fun.

Join us at aMBUSH Gallery Sydney (4a James Street, Waterloo) on Thursday 18 August from 6-9pm for opening night, including drinks supplied by Capital Brewing Co.

Kidology will then be on show daily, 12noon until 4pm, from Friday 19 until Sunday 21 August, with all works for sale.
