A selection of works displayed on a grand scale by one of Australia’s pre-eminent and most distinctive Aboriginal artists – A.Professor Wayne Quilliam – is brightening up the area around 242 Pitt Street and 161 Castlereagh Street in Sydney’s CBD.
The project is a collaboration between Liberty Place/JLL, Icon Project Management, Buildcorp, and aMBUSH Gallery, with the aim of bringing public spaces to life through art.
Using over two dozen images from his stunning digital photographic work, Quilliam takes on the challenge of blending Indigenous ritual with the beauty of natural phenomena to create a unique perspective that is both cultural and conscious.
In these artworks, he brings together traditional stories and mythological imagery to explore deeper questions of existence, blending cultural narratives with a universal curiosity about the meaning of life.
Celebrated internationally, Quilliam’s work uses authentic colours with bold detailing to produce intricate and dynamic compositions. Each piece invites viewers to engage with hidden stories, and to find personal interpretations within the artwork’s complex layers. The arrangement of forms and colours creates a visual journey, drawing the viewer into a harmonious relationship with the environment.
Quilliam takes inspiration from the sky, from the eternal chase between Bahloo the Moon and Bila the Sun, which echoes the rhythms of nature. His art captures the dance of light over the landscape, creating a vibrant tapestry of hues that shift and change, much like the world around us.
Now visitors and workers around the area can take in Quilliam’s impressive photographic works, with a footprint spanning around 100m on Pitt Street and over 200m on Castlereagh Street.
The Pitt Street installation is part of the City of Sydney program of public art on hoardings, with the project being a bespoke execution, curated and produced by aMBUSH Gallery (an initiative of Wiltshire + Dimas Management).
This project also represents a synergistic partnership between aMBUSH Gallery and Wayne Quilliam, building on their years of collaboration on impactful and meaningful works across the nation.
On display to the public for the next two years, this community-focussed endeavour injects vibrancy into the construction zone around the buildings, providing Sydneysiders with a free, world-class placemaking venture and impressive talking point.
