Loose and likeminded: the rise of the 'Ingenious Amateur's' subculture in the 1980s Germany.

Geniale Dilletanten is an exciting new multi-media exhibition curated by Goethe-Institut Australia and presented in collaboration with aMBUSH Gallery and Central Park Mall.

It’s an exclusive and comprehensive collection of 1980s German subculture brought straight from its birthplace in Berlin, and explores the period of artistic upheaval and experimentation shaped by a free-spirited collective of amateurs – the Geniale Dilletanten (or Brilliant Dilletantes) as they became known. These ‘ingenious amateurs’ developed unique approaches to music, fashion, filmmaking, design and art.

Geniale Dilletanten incorporates films, photographs, magazines, posters, audio, video and other artefacts that capture the bold, rough and daring arts scene of the time.
